Defined as unwanted or harmful sound, noise permeates several environmental spaces, including urban parks. Urban parks are a common form of greenspace exposure, intended for restoration, with vegetation known to buffer pollutants, including noise. This exploratory study quantified environmental noise across multiple frequency weightings and examined measures of greenspace for 26 urban parks across five regions in Providence, Rhode Island to evaluate regional differences and relationships between greenspace and noise. Results revealed that normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and tree canopy varied significantly by park region ( p = 0.02). Downtown parks had the highest average noise levels compared to any other region. Noise levels (LAeq) varied significantly across parks by time of day ( p < 0.001) with highest levels observed in late afternoon compared to morning. Correlation analysis revealed varied trends in the relationships between NDVI and noise measures, however relationships between noise and tree canopy and tree equity differed based on the noise frequency weighting. Exploratory moderation analysis suggested that higher greenness was associated with lower C-weighted noise levels with region- specific differences. Relative to Downtown parks, higher greenspace was associated with lower C-weighted noise in both the historically underserved region, Southside parks ( p = 0.03) and the more affluent region, East side parks ( p = 0.01), with a larger point estimate on the East side. These findings demonstrate the complex interplay between greenspace and environmental noise and highlight the importance of integrating considerations of social context in environmental research when investigating urban health exposures and equitable park planning.
